– Defining the Role of Architects in making Smart Cities of the Future

Honourable Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi as a part of his vision for Development of India in the Future has initiated a process for establishing 100 Smart Cities in all parts of the Country.

Prominent Industry Players including IT Companies, Infrastructure Companies, Manufacturing Companies, Builders & Housing Companies, Development Institutions, Financial Institutions and other such Entities have welcomed this move. Most of them have started putting their Act in place by getting their Community together to pitch in a structured manner by defining specific roles for their communities to participate in the MEGA PROJECTS that are likely to be generated as a part of this initiative.

However, Architects, Planners and Design Experts, who the Society expects to take lead in such matters, have not yet managed to find a major say till date in the Current events.

The Indian Institute of Architects, Northern Chapter, representing the Architectural Community strongly feels that all its members and the Community at large needs to come together for moving forward in a Structured manner to work with the Government in ensuring a larger participation of the Architectural Community in making Smart Cities a reality.

We invite you all to participate in the deliberations to evaluate the potential role of Architects and options for finalizing the way forward to work with the Government for ensuring a greater participation of Architects in the Smart Cities initiative.

A session of the Chai Coffee and Architecture on Friday, 13th March 2015, at the New Committee Room, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi at 5:00 PM, has been scheduled to for this topic.

We invite all Architects to be part of this discussion. Please note, non-members of IIA, too, are welcome to these sessions.
